A week after the New Yorker singled out NLSFU star Laith Nakli for his performance as Uncle Naseem in RAMY (Hulu), the New York Times and Hollywood Reporter have each listed the “Uncle Naseem” episode of RAMY’s second season among the best TV episodes of 2020.

In “Hollywood Reporter TV Critics Pick the 10 Best Episodes of 2020,” critic Inkoo Kang calls the episode “a standout — practically a short film unto itself” and writes, “Episode star Laith Nakli has always given his character’s rancid misogyny and anti-Semitism a recognizable familiarity — you may have an Uncle Naseem in your life — to which he adds invaluable layers here, exposing the loneliness and self-hatred of a gay man who can’t help repaying tenderness with punches.”

Similarly, in the NYT article “The Best TV Episodes of 2020,” TV critic James Poniewozik writes, “The Season 2 highlight [of RAMY] is a stunning character portrait of Ramy’s uncle (Laith Nakli), whose abrasiveness is rooted in a lifetime as a closeted gay man.”

Laith’s NLSFU co-star, Waleed Zuaiter, is also featured prominently in the episode.
